Judy Schewe (From the 2009 Town Newsletter) 'Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.' - Lady Bird Johnson The Bristol Library was established in 1900 and incorporated in 1915. Since then the library has seen some significant changes in history and library services; however it has continued to be a mainstay of the community. The Bristol Library serves a rural community, but thinks globally. The information needs of our patrons are ever expanding and the library is growing with those needs. Patrons can now access the library on the internet at our newly developed website http://bristollibrary.wordpress.com or by visiting the Town of Bristol website and clicking on the Library page link. The website provides patrons with up-to-date news, hours of operation, staff profiles, program information and more. There is even a live chat feature that lets patrons talk to our librarian. Patrons can access the OWWL catalog via the website as well A virtual trip to the Bristol Library may be very enticing to many of our patrons, but there is no substitute for an actual visit to our facility. Our cozy atmosphere and helpful staff continue to provide all the services of the bigger libraries of our region. As part of the Pioneer Library System, Bristol provides materials and services to help community residents obtain information that will meet personal, educational and professional needs. The Pioneer Library System ( http://www.pls-net.org/) is a New York State chartered cooperative public library system serving the forty-two public libraries in Ontario, Wayne, Wyoming, and Livingston (OWWL) counties. All patrons of the Bristol Library have access to the materials in the OWWL catalog and may request items either by phone, in person, or on-line Through the OWWL on-line automated circulation system you can have any book, audio book on cassette, CD or playaway (think MP3 Players), VHS, DVD or magazine sent to the Bristol Library from any library in the four county area, usually in just a few days at no cost to you. If you have a particular question you need an answer to, we can provide that too. Stop in for a tutorial on using the OWWL system any time we are open. It's fast easy and free. Did you know that the Bristol Library serves the students of four different school districts? The residents of Bristol send their children to the Canandaigua Central Schools, Honeoye Schools, Naples or Bloomfield Schools. Our staff is happy to assist students when looking to the Bristol Library for their information and reading needs. For our younger patrons we provide a Pre-School Story Time. Children and their caregivers are invited every Tuesday of each month to participate in this free program. Pre-School Story Time is filled with stories, finger plays, action rhymes and more, aimed at children 3-6 years old. Story time, craft and a snack lasts from 10:30 to 11:30 am and no prior sign-up is required. Younger siblings and friends are welcome to attend. A parent or caregiver must accompany children. The Bristol Library continues to provide the community with valuable programming. Fall offerings include the American Red Cross Babysitter Certification Course, AARP's Driver Safety Course, Pumpkin Painting Contest, local author book talks and much, much more. Upcoming events include holiday ornament creations, New York State Summer Reading Program 2010 and seasonal story telling and programming. For times and details please call 229-5862 or visit our website. The library is always looking for new ideas for programming and invites the community to share their talents. Do you have an interesting hobby you would like to share? If you or your group is interested in providing a special program at the library we invite you to contact us. We are looking for volunteers who would like to display their hobbies, collection or crafts as well as holding an informational session about their display. If you would like more information, call Judy at 229-5862. The Bristol Knitters and Needlecrafters continue to meet at the Bristol Library every first and third Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM between the months of April and October, and every first and third Sunday between the months of November and March. The group meets to work on projects, socialize and help each other. They also do community projects and fundraising for the Library. For more information, contact the library at 229-5862 or call Diane Fudalik at 657-6099. The Library is also available as a site for tutoring sessions, book talk groups etc. The Library will be accepting book donations in the spring of 2010 in anticipation of our Annual Book Sale during the Bristol Fun Day. Due to space limitations we are asking the community to refrain from donating books until that time when the library can accommodate your gifts. Special thanks go to all those who volunteered their time and talents to the library throughout the year. We are able to offer so much to our community because of generous donations of time, skills and talents from our volunteers. Here is a sampling of some of the diverse offerings provided: woodworking, preschool programs, cleaning, bake sales, bottle drive donations, book donations, gardening, alpaca visit and weaving instruction, technology support, geocaching programs, quilting, knitting and so much more. The Bristol Library is however, always in need of volunteers The Bristol Library could not function without the tireless efforts of its Board of Trustees and gifted staff. Many thanks go to our Board members Lucinda Perrin, President; Christine Matteson, Vice President; Ann Rogers Lane, Financial Officer; Karen Maczynski, Secretary; Bethyn Boni, Trustee; Karen Dadali, Trustee; Larry Fudalik, Trustee; and Paul Taeschner, Trustee. Mary Jane Stubbings, Diane Fudalik and Brenda Fox, our friendly and knowledgeable clerks, are always ready and willing to assist patrons. the Library welcomes Judy Schewe to its staff. Judy is a New York State Certified Public Libraries and is pleased to join the Bristol Community. More than ever libraries are challenged to provide the same quality services with limited resources. Each year we send the community residents the Annual Fundraiser and Annual Report. We hope that you will acknowledge the significant contributions that this institution provides. Your donations will allow us to continue to serve you as we have for over a century. Please support your library! We are interested in forming a friends group. As a friend you can donate your time and talents to help raise much needed funds that will enhance library services. Please indicate your interest in the Bristol Library Friends when replying to our Annual appeal letter, or by calling the library at 229-5862. SUPPLIES NEEDED The Bristol Library is in need of everyday supplies such as paper products, cleaning supplies, and basic program supplies such as markers, crayons, glue and construction paper. You can drop off these items at the library anytime during open hours. The Bristol Library needs volunteers. If you have even a few minutes to donate, the library can greatly benefit. Some of the tasks we need help for are: gardening, shelving books, book club leaders, providing program refreshments and posting signs about up-coming events. Please call 229-5862 if you would like to help.
