The Genesee Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) is pleased to announce 2024 recipient of the
Small Cities/Rural Communities Project of the Year Award for Transportation Projects
Town of Bristol Egypt Road Stability Improvement Project
Town of Bristol Recognized for Highway Drainage Improvements
The Genesee Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) recently announced that the Town of Bristol Egypt Road Stabilization Project, completed in 2024 by the Town of Bristol Highway Department, has received its prestigious “Project of the Year” award in the Small Cities/Rural Communities category.
The Genesee Valley APWA Branch represents Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Schyler, Seneca and Wayne Counties. Its members are public works professionals, including engineers, contractors and vendors with years of institutional knowledge and expertise.
The APWA Public Works Project of the Year Award for Small Cities and Rural Communities with a population of 75,000 or less is established to promote excellence in demonstrating creativity, ingenuity, and efficiency in the delivery of Public Works project that have a profound and positive impact on the life of the community. The Project awards promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant, architect, engineer, and the contractors who, working together, complete public works projects.
According to Paul Chatfield, P.E., Awards Committee Chairman, the Bristol Egypt Road Stabilization Project included a “self-help approach for construction” by the Town Highway Department staff which saved the Town of Bristol several hundred thousand dollars.
I am extremely proud of the team for doing such an outstanding job,” said Highway Superintendent Ron Wilson. “We always strive to do good work and earn the respect of our residents, but to be recognized by an association like APWA is incredibly rewarding,” he continued.
MRB Group, the Town’s Engineer, assisted the Highway Department in addressing deterioration of a section of Egypt Road, including a steep section of sloped territory where years of erosion and storm runoff had finally resulted in total failure of the edge of the existing roadway- a safety hazard to motorists.
Working as a team with the Bristol Highway Department, MRB Group’s engineers designed a project that would utilize the talents of the Highway staff, significantly reducing costs.
“Not only were we able to address the road surface failure with a Gabion Basket Wall, but we redesigned the entire section of roadway with improved drainage,” Wilson further explained. “Residents are now safe, erosion has been addressed, and perennial road repairs due to water damage in this area have been eliminated.”
The Town’s Highway Department managed and completed construction on their own well-coordinated schedule, completing the work under six months in tandem with uninterrupted day-to-day operations. With assistance from MRB Group, Ontario County Soil & Water helped the Town secure funding through the NYS DEC Water Quality Improvement Program, which covered 75% of the project cost—allowing it to be completed without significant additional expense to the Town.
“It was a great team effort, by hard-working people who care about our residents,” Wilson stated, expressing thanks to both MRB Group personnel along with his staff at the town.
